What's covered?

A standard homeowners or property insurance policy will cover water damage from rain before it hits the ground, but it will not cover damage from flooding. You'll need a flood insurance policy to be covered.

Certain areas are more likely to flood than others, but flood damage can happen anywhere.

Facts and tips

  • Premiumthe National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) sets flood insurance premiums, and they do not differ from carrier to carrier. The NFIP requires that flood insurance premiums be paid in full.

  • Waiting period—typically, there's a 30-day waiting period after a flood insurance policy is purchased for it to be effective. Some exceptions are made if your mortgagee requires flood insurance for a new closing, or transferring coverage between carriers.
