A standard homeowners or property insurance policy will cover water damage from rain before it hits the ground, but it will not cover damage from flooding. You'll need a flood insurance policy to be covered.
Certain areas are more likely to flood than others, but flood damage can happen anywhere.
Facts and tips
Premium—the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) sets flood insurance premiums, and they do not differ from carrier to carrier. The NFIP requires that flood insurance premiums be paid in full.
Waiting period—typically, there's a 30-day waiting period after a flood insurance policy is purchased for it to be effective. Some exceptions are made if your mortgagee requires flood insurance for a new closing, or transferring coverage between carriers.
